Social Bookmarking & Networking Plugin For WordPress…

Someone wrote to me a few days ago wondering what I’m using to display the “Share the knowledge!” widget below all the posts on Online Marketing Today. You can see it live at the bottom of this article (feel free to use it) but here’s a quick screen shot as well…

The plugin we’re using for this is free and called “Sexy Bookmarks” and you can download it here (or simply search and install it using the Add New Plugins feature from your WordPress admin panel).

This is a pretty straight forward plugin to setup.  It appends the widget to the bottom of your post content automatically (or the top, bottom, or both if desired) without the need to modify your theme templates manually. Optionally it can also be appended to your RSS feed.

In my opinion is a nice unobtrusive way to add a social bookmarking / networking component to all of your pages. However it would be very easy to get carried away with it. As I write this it has something like 89 different social bookmarking and networking websites included within the settings page…

I would strongly suggest you only include 5-8 of the most relevant services applicable to your website and social media goals (the most popular social bookmarking services). Right now we’ve got it running…

  • Twitter (retweeting)
  • FaceBook
  • Google Buzz
  • Del.Icio.Us
  • Digg
  • Reddit
  • Stumble Upon
  • …and Technorati

…you can also sort the order of which services to feature, left to right, via a simple drag and drop placement. So give the primary, more popular services, higher priority.

If you’re going to use this you should also set the links to be “no follow” to help retain link juice for your SEO and I’d also open the links in a new window so and visitors bookmarking your stuff can easily return back to your website.

Feel free to take it for a spin below if you want to see it in action and send us some Twitter love at the same time…
