This is quite common, google has been known to hide some back link information, In the example you gave it is giving you two very different values, it may be that you are going do a different google dataset as you view more pages within the results and the information is simply not available on that server. Google have certainly been making it more and more difficult to obtain decent back link information lately, there are good reasons for this, it used to be possible to locate almost all the back links for a competitor then request links from the same sources, by making it harder to locate this information it makes it a little bit harder to simply go after your competitions links.

Hi John,
I'm not so sure that Google still shows all known links within the Webmaster tools. My experience is that it still shows only a selection - but more than you would see from a normal link: search.

Hi Duncan & Keith

Duncan, your mention of Yahoo is still valid despite the change to Bing. There was a period a few days ago that Yahoo Site Explorer was not showing InLinks but as of today they are back.

http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

With respect to Google, if you have a google account log in, go to your account and add your website URL then validate it. You will then have access to google's webmaster tools with a full diagnostic of your validated website(s). This will give you a full list of inbound links known to google. By doing it this way google can give webmasters information about their own site without giving competitors access to the same information.

Keith, there are also other very useful diagnostics in webmaster tools giving you masses of information about your site once it is registered and validated.

I hope this helps
