Trying to find good free host -- Posted by Mike on 03-17-04 12:57
Hi all,
I'm trying to find a good free ISP that would be acceptable for a site
hosting object downloads for The Sims.
Right now I'm hosting my site at HostUltra, which doesn't allow ZIP
files but has unlimited bandwidth, and hosting the object files on
VillagePhotos, which has a 3MB per day download limit.
The good thing about this setup is that the site is always up, even
when the object download bandwidth limit has been exceeded. Then, the
next day, the downloads are back up... they're not gone for weeks or
months.
Problem is, by 6PM EST, my bandwidth is usually out, even though most
of the files are very small. Also, I have a few items for the site
that exceed 1MB, meaning that a huge chunk of the VillagePhotos
bandwidth would be removed if someone were to remove them.
I'm trying to find a good free site that meets the following criteria:
* Decent size for a Sims site, around 30 MB, hopefully more.
* Decent bandwidth for a Sims site, but anything that beats 3MB per
day is good.
* Good bandwidth plan that doesn't shut down the site for a month
whenever I go over my bandwidth. I like the way VillagePhotos does it,
daily bandwidth and it's back on the next day.
* Decent ad plan. I don't mind banner ads or a popup or two, but no
spyware or excessive popups.
* ZIP files allowed. The big one - the host must be able to host ZIP
files.
A good alternative might be a ZIP-friendly host with good bandwidth
and size where I could keep my downloads, and then I could keep the
HTML on HostUltra.
Thanks for any suggestions!

I don't know why an ISP would block zip files unless they are worried that
you might open it, double click on an executable and launch amalcious
software. Still, it's not their decision.

Probably not the solution you are really looking for, but I was going to say
that hosting is still so cheap nowadays (easy to find hosts for as low as
$5-6 per month... might be able to shop around for as low as $3 per month)
and with a $10 domain name you can setup and run the site and not have
anything to worry about as far as file types, ads or bandwith for about
$60-75 a year
If you are a web designer you can put in the effort and make it look good
and use it as part of your portfolio... paying a few bucks a year for
website in your portfolio that you can tinker with and upgrade whenever you
want to showcase your skills isn't too bad, I used to have quite a few of my
own sites in my portfolio
Or you could put a couple of ads up on the site, be it linking to buy The
Sims and expansion sets at Amazon, Google Adsense or just selling a spot
here and there to other Sims sites (charging $5-15 a year for a banner ad on
your site to link to other sims sites and you'd only need a handful to cover
the cost of the site)
Finally, if you are really into doing The Sims mods you could put up a bunch
of free ones and then using something like paypal or another service you
could do up some bigger premium ones and charge people a few bucks here and
there to download them... maybe eventually expanding it into a site where
people can post their own Sims mods for pay-to-download where you'll split
the proceeds with them.
Just some thoughts,
Clint

See http://www.enhancedhost.com/hosting_us.php. The $32.50 price per year
works out to $2.71 US per month.
