Revolutionary marketing tool -- Posted by Wayne Lundberg on 12-26-03 00:18
Am cross-posting on my belief that this information is gold for all three
newsgroups.
Only once in a great while do we, in sales and marketing, get a free ride.
Over forty years of helping small businesses get launched; from product
design through the process of bill of materials, shipping, QA, sales....
marketing has always been one of the most difficult of all aspects. To
determine with some certainty the perceived value of the product; i.e. how
much will the customer pay. And then determine the cost to make, distribute,
collect, i.e. margin - has been a major problem.
Not any more.
In my efforts to help my son's business I have done everything from spam to
direct mail, to demos --- the whole nine yards. I quit spamming when my ISP
fined me a chunk of money!
I wrote to the customer service people at eBay asking for advice on how best
to use their service and how to go about determining if my son's smaller
version would be more acceptable to the market by posting an auction on a
non-existent product. NO!!! Can't do that.... but... and here is the chile,
the hot sauce, in this note: You can use their closed auctions feature in
the Advanced Search functions and type in the key-word you would use for
your product. In seconds a listing of that key word along with what price it
went for appears!!!!
For example; say I want to tool up to manufacture the wheels and tires used
in RC model cars, sail cars, whatever. I know they are a standard item; but
maybe with my injection molding machine I can make them for less. So I hit
1/8 scale wheels - advanced search for items closed, and over 3,000 hits
show up in the list! In minutes I can tell what people are willing to pay,
what quality, what shipping costs, how they pay... This is incredible!
Believe me, I'm not hyping eBay, but as a user and as an entrepreneur, I
want to share this great tool with all of you.
And, Merry Christmas, and expect and enjoy a prosperous 2004.

I've bought many of things from eBay but did not know you could search
closed listings. Thanks for sharing!

My son has a bunch of brand new servos from the kits he buys from the RC
wholesaler, which he replaces with a heavy duty ball bearing servo. He
wanted to know how much he could get for them. So we went into closed
auctions and it was a true eye-opener. I've been playing there for the last
few days looking for stuff similar to some of my 'inventions' over the years
and it is really interesting.

What I have noticed is that it only lists items that have sold within the
last 30 days. I guess it is better than nothing, but a longer history
would have been better. It's free and I'm complaining! :)
Also,... I took me a bit to find the option in the advanced page because
the phrase is "Completed Items only" and I kept trying to find "closed".
My brain had the thesaurus turned off.

I agree. You can also get the same research via andale.com . They charge
you for it but you can some sample queries for free
