WASHINGTON, D.C.--March 2, 2001--PROTECT YOUR PRIVATES ONLINE -- Shining the spotlight on one of the most widely debated Internet issues, earlier this week EarthLink (Nasdaq: ELNK), the nation's second largest Internet service provider, launched a marketing campaign focused on Internet privacy. [pilcrow (paragraph sign)] As part of its effort, EarthLink dispatched "Privacy Protection Teams" to install hundreds of rear-view mirrors and toilet seat cover holders -- each with branded privacy messages -- above urinals and in bathroom stalls at dozens of high-traffic bars and eateries in Washington, D.C. and Austin, Texas.
According to Claudia Caplan, EarthLink's vice president of brand marketing, the guerilla promotion was intended to make people think about their Internet privacy -- a subject often taken for granted -- while they are in another environment where privacy is commonly expected.
